How to Mail Cotton Envelopes (Without Ruining Them)

How to Mail Cotton Envelopes (Without Ruining Them)

Handmade cotton envelopes are gorgeous — and also a little more delicate than regular paper. To keep yours pristine on their journey through the mail, you’ll want to protect them from sorting machines, scuffs, and smudges.

Here are two simple ways to do that:

Option 1: Hand-Cancel Your Envelopes at the Post Office

What is hand-canceling?

Instead of running your envelope through an automated machine, a postal worker stamps (cancels) the postage by hand so it doesn’t go through the sorting equipment.

Why it’s great for cotton envelopes:

  • Less bending, crushing, or tearing
  • Protects delicate deckled edges and wax seals
  • Reduces risk of ink smearing or scuffing

How to hand-cancel your cotton envelopes:

  • Address and stamp each cotton envelope at home.
  • Do NOT drop them in a mailbox – take them inside the post office.
  • Go to the counter and politely ask for “hand canceling” on your envelopes.
  • Let them know these are handmade cotton envelopes / wedding invitations so they understand they’re delicate.
  • Be prepared:
    • Some locations may charge a small fee for hand-canceling.
    • Not every post office handles it the same way, so patience and kindness help.

Option 2: Use the Outer Complimentary Envelopes We Provide

If you don’t want to worry about hand-canceling, the easiest option is to mail using the outer envelopes we include with your cotton set.

How it works:

  • Place your beautiful cotton envelope (with invitation inside) into the outer mailing envelope.
  • Address and stamp only the outer envelope.
  • Mail as usual — drop-off, blue box, or post office counter.

Why this protects your cotton envelopes:

  • The outer envelope takes the damage from sorting machines and handling.
  • Your cotton envelope stays clean, crisp, and photo-ready for your recipient.
  • Deckled edges, ribbons, and wax seals inside are less likely to snag or catch.

Extra Tips for Best Results

  • Use high-quality, non-smearing pens or printed addresses on the outer envelope.
  • Avoid thick, lumpy decorations on the outside of anything going through machines.
  • For very thick or layered suites, ask the clerk if it needs extra postage (non-machinable surcharge).

Whether you choose hand-canceling or our complimentary outer envelopes, a little extra care at mailing time goes a long way toward making sure your cotton envelopes arrive just as beautiful as when you packed them.
